University of Toronto Mississauga New Science Building

A state-of-the-art center for innovative life sciences research.

As an associate at KieranTimberlake, Neil led the design of this 160,000 square foot life sciences research building at the University of Toronto's Mississauga campus. When complete, the building will offer cutting-edge laboratory, support, and office space, serving as the headquarters for several key departments, including the University's Centre for Medicinal Chemistry.

Collaboration lies at the core of the design. Working closely with UTM researchers, the team organized labs to maximize collaboration across research disciplines and sharing of specialized equipment, while putting innovative research on display for the university community. With an expansive vegetated roof and ample glazing, the building also seeks to connect building users to the campus environment.

The building is also shaped by the university's ambitious commitment to cut its total carbon footprint to 37% below 1990 levels by 2030. A range of features reduce the building's energy demand, such as ultra-low velocity fume hoods in labs, heat recovery systems, and demand control ventilation. Other systems, such as a ground-source heat pump field and rooftop photovoltaic array reduce the building's reliance on fossil fuels, allowing it to run primarily on electricity.
